On Monday I did my first television show; a great program called AM Northwest (the Good Morning America for Portland). The hosts, Helen and Dave were very nice and the interview was on what I’ve learned from Don Juan about love and relationship.
They wanted me to add some practical examples for viewers (and readers). I am definitely not too high and literary to talk about relationship, since the book was inspired by my own question of how I could stay happily and passionately married to my wife for the rest of my life. This was the question that Don Juan came to answer and so I am happy to share his secrets. While the book is not a self-help book and can be read simply as an adventure love story and historical thriller, I do hope that reading the book will transform people’s understanding of love and passion.
Some of the topics we discussed were: listening to a woman’s unspoken needs, what all women look for in men, love is not feeling, etc. I actually wrote some cheats on my hand but my media escort, Crofton, who is also a film maker, told me not to look down during the interview. I followed her suggestion and fortunately did not blank out during the interview. The television camera staring at you can wipe the mind blank but fortunately mine wasn’t. The hosts were quite nice and clearly very engaged in the subject. One of the women who came to the reading at Powell’s that night told me how much she had liked the topics we discussed on the TV show and wanted to get a book for a couple she knows who have been happily married for 29 years. In our culture of divorce and cynicism about marriage, I think it is hard to remember that True Passionate Love is possible and that people can stay happily and passionately married throughout their lives. If you are one of these people or know one of these couples, I’d love to hear about it.
This book about don Juan explains us better than Tirso de Molina, José de Zorrilla, Leandro F. de Moratín or even Dr. Marañón ( other famous authors of Don Juan books ) how complicated and, sometimes ambiguous , is the behaviour of a man lover. Too many times, love turns into hate. Don Juan represents a Great Lover, unable to hate. Anybody wants to join him ?
